    Hi everyone,

One thing I've always wanted to do is take a trip across the Atlantic Ocean from New York City to London on the Queen Mary 2.

I'd also love to take a European river cruise. I lived in Germany in the late 70s when I was a young boy but don't remember much anymore of my time there.

I've got the timer. All I need is the money.

I am hoping to buy a small yacht in the next year or two, sail to france and do the french canals, then head slowly to Turkey before heading up to Romania and then the Danube. After that I have no clue :)

Those Viking river cruises look interesting on the commercials.
They strike me as a better option than the crowded cruise ships
with more going on daily unless you enjoy bars and gambling..

The 'idea' of a ship cruise on the ocean sounds intriguing but
the highly commercial aspect of regular cruise ships makes it
sound less thrilling to me. I've been on a couple of smaller
cruise ships on the Great Lakes, just day trips, and it was a
fun experience but I can't imagine spending weeks on one..

I've got the timer. All I need is the money.

    I Know the feeling.. B)

I'm not much of a traveller really. I figure I'm in a place I really
    like so why leave? B)

Your writing about canals in France had me thinking of when I worked at Lock and Dam 43 Ohio River
The older employees there told me that the idea to do that in the USA came from what the French did to control their waterways for nsvigation.
The Dam at Lock 43 was a Wicket Dam.
Wickets were made of Foot square timbers (4 of them) held together by metal plates at the Top, Bottom and in the Middle.
The Middle was a framework that had one end attached to the wicket with the other end fastened at the borrom of the river. Also iat the Middle was a long metal pole that 'propped' the wicket in place when it landed in a notch when being raised.

French names for all of the parts of the Dam were used where I worked.
Chnoine, Boule, Weir and possibly the word Wicket also.

Lock and Dam 43 has been removed and replaced by a concrete Dam with Tainer Gates which are raised/lowered by wire cable attached fo electric motors mounted at the top of the Dam Piers.

Enjoy your Ocean trip and River trip.

That was an interesting read, so much so that I saved it to cross reference. We have some canals in Ireland but they are very restricted as to what you can do, and they don't like live aboards

The Public Information Office (PIO) for The Louisville District could give info to you about the older Wicket Dams on the Ohio River .

Later I worked at McAlpine Locks and Dam, there is a Wikipedia page ffor McAlpine.
Maybe Wikipedia has a page about Wicket Dams.
