    Hi everyone,

This heatwave is terrible. I've been making all of my doctors' appointments in the early morning just so I can try to get home before the heat kicks in...

I have been trying to do all outdoor stuff real early and then forget that

down to 77F so it is a challenge.

Yeah. Yesterday I don't think it got to 90F here... maybe 85F... but even
then the heat index was ~110F. :( It did cool off some last night because
it stormed, but it was still 70-something.

By late August things are usually quite a bit better here compared to now -- temps are usually going back to normal early-summer temps, the days are getting shorter, the evenings darker, and summer vacations are usually coming to an end, with people gathering for late-night parties with their acquaintances, trying to grab the last bits of summer before it's too late...

    That's great!

Myself, I'm closing the blinds in my apartment and have an air purifier with its air stream pointing upwards towards the ceiling, giving a nice and subtle breeze throughout the apartment. Not too much, and not too little -- just enough to get the feel of defeating that humidity... =)

I live in a home that was converted to apartments and they did that coversion with the absolute minimum expense. Can't wait until I can mpove somewhere else.

Right now, it's 7:45 PM EDT. It's still 82F (28C) with 74% humidity. It's still pretty potent outside but I gotta water my plants.

Yeah, except maybe making it worse! Unless the rain is overnight, it is raining here and then the Sun is coming out and sucking all the moisture
    into the air.

I suppose one thing about 'appointments' is that they are usually in
    air conditioned buildings..

I was out shopping today and appreciated that since even here in mid-northern Ontario where it's usually a little cooler than further south, it got up
to 31c (87f) with the Humidex making it feel like 37c (99f). I suppose a lot
of people in the Southern USA would laugh at that, the way we tend to
laugh at people who think 20 or 30 degrees below freezing in winter is
    actually cold.. B)

I remember a summer motorcycle trip I took to Florida in my misspent
youth and when I came out of a Georgia Hotel at 10 am it was already
at 105f. Another guest just leaving noticed my Ontario plates and asked
where I was heading and, when I told him mid Florida, he laughed and
asked if it wasn't already hot enough here?

It's pretty rare to hit 90f where I am. We usually only see 4 or 5
days a year that hot, so I've never owned an air conditioner, other
than in my car, but I've been giving a couple of fans a good workout
    the last few days..

Also in reference to our colder winters, I may comment here but you
won't hear me complain about summer heat. I much prefer unusual heat
to unusual cold. I just try to limit outdoor activities on the worst
of those days in either direction.. B)

Same, but I do probably complain more about the summer heat than the harsh winter weather. At least with the latter, I know the bugs are getting
killed, and I can add layers. In the Summer, the bugs are loving it and
there are only so many layers one can take off before it becomes impossible (and illegal!). :D

Funny what we get used to though. In the distant past on this board we
used to chat a lot with a number of people from Australia and it was
always fun to hear them complain about extreme cold when the temps.
dropped below 40f, and some had never seen snow in their lives unless
they headed into the mountains.. I also recall a comment from one
saying he was waiting for the temperature to hit 85f so he could go
surfing, since anything lower than that was too cold for swimming..

That said, we all adapt, and quicker than one might expect.. Not long
ago in winter I'd have been thrilled to have 'hot' days up around 70f
but after the recent heat wave here, I find myself feeling cold the
last few days as it dropped to the high 60's here. Suddenly 67f or so
is not light T-Shirt weather anymore... B)

LOL, unless the wind is howling, I think 40F can be comfortable.
Meanwhile, 85F would probably be driving me indoors, although being in/near water might change that.

Funny how that works. I know the last few days of "Spring" here, after it
has been cold and before it gets hot, feel warmer than the first few days
of "Autumn," when it first starts to cool off again. Psychology I guess. ;)

I used to love the cold. I still prefer it over the heat but with diabetic neuropathy and arthritis, the cold now brings on an additional element of constant pain after a week or so of cold. I plan on buying a larger, thicker winter coat in September as well as a few pairs of long johns.

Where I am, we generally don't get snow and ice until January or Februrary so
I still enjoy taking my mobility scooter to the local veterans' hospital I'm seen at. It's about a 10 mile (16 km) round trip which is usually doable but last year, I noticed that I have become much more sensitive to the wind so I need the long johns now. Thankfully, my prosthetic shoes are very
well-built and made of high quality leather so my feet don't get too cold.

I do wear a wool hat and insulasted gloves. I may have to start wearing a
ski mask hat as my face seems to be a lot m,ore sensitive to cold and my skin is becoming much more sensative to cold.

I also should start making a Thermos of hot cocoa or beef broth to bring with me to enjoy along the way too. A good Thermos bottle is a real investment these days but well worth it! I like this one: https://tinyurl.com/2trp5xdn (amazon.com).

I turn 53 next month and I have to remind myself that I'm not 18 anymore...

That sounds pretty rough.. This past winter I stayed at my place all winter after years of wintering elsewhere in a 'proper' house. My place is not
really insulated for winter use so keeping it warm enough is tricky and
I spend a lot of time outside digging paths in the snow to do things like
get water from a hole in the ice, so I tend to notice the cold and snow
more than I would in town where I could just stay in on a bad day.

I'm also thin, so less natural 'insulation' which maybe doesn't help.. B)

Wow, that would be quite a trip on a scooter! I see people using them in
town the odd time but it must be hard when things get snowy and icy.

When I was working I was outside one February day and the wind blew, it rained, then sleet and snow began.
That day i made a promise to myself not to ever complain about hot wx.

If someone says its too hot in August, I will say " think of February.".

BTW, hope your birthday is real good to you.
You wrote about not being 18 anymore, well twist those numbers around and add a couple years to it to equal my age.

We have a fan on a stand and if both doors to the half bath are open and the fan is running the air circulates through the rooms.

That was part of it. I only had a litre of water in my water bladder as it was small and he didn't want to stop. The night before the bust up, I was throwing everything up. Will never travel in heat like it again

I can see why there were issues. I'd have to carry ar least 2 liters of
water on me at all times. I'm planning on getting a 40 ounce (1,1
liter) Thermos bottle to make sure I stay hydrated when taking my
scooter to the VA hospital which is a 5 mile (8 km) trip each way.

When you say scooter, you mean gas-powered for that total 26km
trip, right? What make model is it?

I mean a mobility cooter. It's fully electric. The model I have is a
    Pride Victory 10.

That one has max 15.50mi range, but your return trip is
26km=16mi ..so, that's borderline getting you home!

And, at max 5mph, that makes for 1hr+ ride one way. Wow.

Unless my math is totally faulty, that's 16km...

The total round trip is 16km. Not 26. It's a 5-mile trip each way so
    10 miles or 16km.

And, at max 5mph, that makes for 1hr+ ride one way. Wow.

It normally is around 40 minutes each way. It depends on how many
traffic lights I hit also. It also depends if I stop at a store along
the way. 5 MPH is slow, yes, but it sure beats walking.

I can take the bus home but the buses are so rickety that when they hit
a bump in the road, which is often, it can literally throw my back out.
I usually will take the bus in less-than-desireable weather.

It is a PITA, yes, but it sure beats not being able to do anything at
    all.

My bad. :( Dunno how/why I came up with 26km.

And after we bust up, I went on a trip across Germany and France to get the ferry back to Ireland. Drove non stop to get to the ferry. Had a couple of wobbles and also almost ran out of petrol in the middle of nowhere. I have seen him on the street but we don't speak
