At the time Kenneth Johnson was writing the script. The protagonist were originally not going to be aliens from outer space but NBC did not think American audiences would intentify with a facist US goverance, as we are conditioned to look for external threats.

Makes you think, huh?

Actually, it does. When you think about it, due to our location it is
going to be pretty difficult for external threats to reach our shores,
unless Canada or Mexico decide to invade. Otherwise, the external threat
would have to reach our shores first.

I attended a church service last weekend. The pastor brought that up. He
was making a comparison to the church with it. In both cases, his message
was that the threat is more likely to come from within.
