    I've been studying this. It's pretty funny that there is no problems in my OS/2 Jamnntpd. Yesterday I did more research of the code, and in nntpserv.c I commented out the line:

    // strcpy(mimefrom,&mimefrom[6]);

    Compiled in 64bit Ubuntu (22.04.3) with -m32, and it seems to work. For now. :)

    Also it depends on the news client how it shows the "From:" in the message list. Pretty weird. :D

    You're welcome! I still cannot understand why some news clients show that "From: " in the msg list and some don't. Too "smart" clients maybe. :)

    Yeah, Thunderbird is the "too smart" nntp client which is causing most of the trouble. :)

    Didn't you say you were still having issues with the FROM field not
    displaying properly in your newsreader?

    I've been studying this. It's pretty funny that there is no problems in
    my OS/2 Jamnntpd. Yesterday I did more research of the code, and in nntpserv.c I commented out the line:

    I've also been trying to track it down.

    //   strcpy(mimefrom,&mimefrom[6]);

    Compiled in 64bit Ubuntu (22.04.3) with -m32, and it seems to work. For now. :)

    Carlos assisted me with a patch for Smapinntpd. Basically the same thing that was added to Jamnntpd 1.2 to fix the From field, just in the correct locations in Smapinntpd's nntpserv.c since it differed from Jamnntpd's code.

    Also it depends on the news client how it shows the "From:" in the
    message list. Pretty weird. :D

    Yeah, Thunderbird was definitely the hardest one to please. But I seem to be good now.

    Testing outbound after changing some config. Don't expect a TZUTC kludge...

    If you wanted to include the kludge you could do something like this where you modify the MSGTMP file after IceEdit is done with it:

    [-- Begin ICEEDIT.BAT --] @ECHO OFF C: CD \TELEGARD\DOORS\IEDIT ICEEDIT.EXE /D:C:\TELEGARD\TEMP%1 CD \TELEGARD\TEMP%1 REN C:\TELEGARD\TEMP%1\MSGTMP MSGTMP.NEW TYPE C:\TELEGARD\KLUDGE.TXT
    C:\TELEGARD\TEMP%1\MSGTMP TYPE C:\TELEGARD\TEMP%1\MSGTMP.NEW
    C:\TELEGARD\TEMP%1\MSGTMP DEL C:\TELEGARD\TEMP%1\MSGTMP.NEW [--
    End ICEEDIT.BAT --]

    I can't load iceedit in a batch file from within The Reader.

    In KLUDGE.TXT include the kludges you want (e.g TZUTC & CHRS), here's the one I was using: https://nrbbs.net/KLUDGE.TXT

    I just got it and compiled yesterday from tin.org, and it said it was the "latest stable branch". I searched github and couldn't find anything on there, either. I assume you are on their mailing list or something?

    I did see mention of that version, and it looks like the only difference is some compilation error fixes with kefir and xcc, and a configure error with cproc. I don't use any of those so that wouldn't affect me anyways. :)

    It still has the same "timestamp anomaly" though. Any idea what's wrong? http://pics.wfido.ru/img/948di9485j394_2gejf.png

    I didn't notice that, to be honest. I have only played with it for about an hour so far. I'll have to take a closer look, but from your screenshot, the 1970 timestamps are from a very old BBS software (Proboard) that probably hasn't been updated in forever, so that could very well be the cause. As for Tommi, I don't know.. unless he was posting from his (very old) BBS also.

    With all that said, slrn and tin seem VERY similar.

    Nick

    I just got it and compiled yesterday from tin.org, and it said it was
    the "latest stable branch".

    No fakken way it is a stable version.

    What the shit are you running? An unstable version? Then go ahead and .. yourself.

    I think you're replying to the wrong person.

    I just got it and compiled yesterday from tin.org, and it said it was
    the "latest stable branch".

    No fakken way it is a stable version.

    Re-read the message, as far as who I was replying to, and who is running which version, and you'll better understand what you did wrong here.

    Nick

    Hi Nicholas.

    It still has the same "timestamp anomaly" though. Any idea what's wrong? GH>> http://pics.wfido.ru/img/948di9485j394_2gejf.png

    It would be nice to investigate those messages with bad dates. I don't see them here. Concord BBS software is suffering of year 2020 bug, but exported messages are fixed with pktdate.

    It could possible just be the way tin is retrieving the date from those messages created by older BBS softwares as well. I don't know. That was just the first thing I noticed, as the majority of them were from Proboard. I didn't know whether or not the messages you posted were actually from Concord or not, but I guess I just hoped they were, as it would probably be easier to narrow down if they were. ;)

    It seems that your haven't applied the 'min/max' bugfix to your
    smapinntpd. So your server always reports "no new messages".

    Search for:

    sockprintf(var,"%s %lu %lu y" CRLF,g->tagname,min,max);

    It should be:

    sockprintf(var,"%s %lu %lu y" CRLF,g->tagname,max,min);

    Check the 'Options menu' (Shift+m), I have these set as follows:

    11 Show only unread articles : OFF
    50 Number of articles to get : 0

    which correspond to the lines in tinrc:

    show_only_unread_arts=OFF
    getart_limit=0

    It seems I already have those two set this way. Do I need to do some kind of saving of messages? For example, these are default settings:

    mark_saved_read=OFF
    process_only_unread=OFF
    kill_level=0
    batch_save=ON
    interactive_mailer=0
    cache_overview_files=OFF

    These were a few that were confusing to me.

    At the moment, if a group has multiple new articles (or just one), it only downloads the latest new article for each group, and doesn't seem to store them anywhere (not saving?). My "Mail" and "News" directories are empty, always.

    You're right! This whole time I had a feeling I was missing something while porting things from jamnntpd to smapinntpd early on.

    Very wierd, though, that this issue only affected tin, and no others (oddly enough, the original patch was provided by a guy from tin.org). :)

    Search for:

    sockprintf(var,"%s %lu %lu y" CRLF,g->tagname,min,max);

    It should be:

    sockprintf(var,"%s %lu %lu y" CRLF,g->tagname,max,min);

    There was two lines that needed that change. I went back and took a look at the patch on the 'ftnapps/jamnntpd' repo and made the change.

    That did the trick. Thanks!

    I totally can disregard this "inconvenience". :-) It's only when the news reader does "Get all messages from the server" do these oddly dated msgs appear at the bottom as being the "most recent". If I limit the number to some reasonable value (20..50) they're not showing up.
